SUBVERSIVE PARALLELS
Could a possible encounter with our recent history be a bridge to a healing dialogue?
In the history of humanity, the practice of denying the “other” has been employed in political, social, economic and cultural spaces, in order to construct a status quo where “We” fulfil the dual function of being normal and special. The question is what happens when this logic develops to the point of turning an “other” into an enemy. And not just an enemy seen from the outside, but among us. Reflecting on how certain conflicts in the private and public sphere can lead to potential humanitarian catastrophes is an urgent matter.
By bringing together artistic creations, the exhibition aims to start a dialogue about the diversity of perceptions around the construction of the inner enemy, its continuity and parallels in different contexts and spaces. The doctrine of the inner enemy is a colonial discursive legacy that has legitimised violence, war and genocide, for the socio-economic concentration of capital, through exclusion based on ethnicity, class, religion, ideology, gender, etc. Often expressed in unclassified state documents, which recognise the need to identify certain territories and social groups as a threat. From contextual differences and their particularities, “Subversive Parallels” seeks to investigate a wide range of narratives related to the nation-state, assuming the contradictions, resistances and tensions of this relationship.
Disrupting and challenging the institutional narratives implies to conceive this NOmade Biennial edition as a space of pedagogical encounter, where production and circulation of knowledge -as well as arts practice-, becomes an essential topic towards an emancipatory thinking.Fernando Hierro
